REMOVAL / INSPECTION / INSTALLATION

Thermostat Removal / Installation

    Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    Drain the engine coolant.
  3. 3
    Remove in the order shown in the figure.
    Exploded view of the thermostat housing on the engine. Numbered callouts (1)–(4): (1) Radiator hose upper, (2) Water thermoswitch connector, (3) Thermostat cover, (4) Thermostat. Note inside diagram: GASKET. REPLACE. INSTALL WITH PRINTED FACE (GREEN) TOWARD THERMOSTAT. Torque value 19—25 N·m (1.9—2.6 m-kg, 14—19 ft-lb) on the cover bolts. Unit caption: N·m (m-kg, ft-lb).

    Install in the reverse order of removal.
    Gasket: replace. Install with printed face (green) toward thermostat.

INSPECTION

Thermostat Inspection

    Visually check that the thermostat valve is airtight.

    Place the thermostat and a thermometer in water.
  3. 3
    Heat the water and check the following: initial-opening temperature, full-open temperature, and full-open lift.
Initial-opening temperature (Main)
86.5—89.5°C (188—193°F)
Initial-opening temperature (Sub)
83.5—86.5°C (182—188°F)
Full-open temperature
100°C (212°F)
Full-open lift (Main)
8.0mm (0.31 in) min.
Full-open lift (Sub)
1.5mm (0.06 in) min.
