SOLENOID VALVE (PURGE CONTROL)

On-vehicle Inspection

Solenoid Valve (Purge Control) On-vehicle Inspection

  1. 1
Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
Photograph of the solenoid valve (purge control) in situ on the engine, with a hand pointing to it. Used for on-vehicle inspection steps.
    05U0FX-183
  2. 2
    Run the engine at idle.
  3. 3
Disconnect the vacuum hose from the solenoid valve and verify that no vacuum is felt at the solenoid valve.
  4. 4
If not as specified, check the solenoid valve.

Inspection

Solenoid Valve (Purge Control) Inspection

  1. 1
Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the solenoid valve.
Line drawing of the solenoid valve (purge control) removed, showing the body, mounting bracket, and the two vacuum ports for the inspection-with-vacuum-hoses-disconnected step.
    05U0FX-184
  2. 2
Verify that no air flows through the valve.
  3. 3
Disconnect the solenoid valve connector and connect 12V and a ground to the terminals of the solenoid valve.
Line drawing of the solenoid valve with its electrical connector disconnected and 12 V plus ground applied directly to the terminals via test leads. Labels GROUND and 12V are visible on the connector at the top-left.
    05U0FX-185
  4. 4
Verify that the air flows through the valve.
  5. 5
If not as specified, replace the solenoid valve.

TWO-WAY CHECK VALVE

Inspection

Two-Way Check Valve Inspection

  1. 1
    Remove the valve.
Line drawing of the two-way check valve with arrows showing installation direction. Port B is labeled on the left and port A is labeled on the right with arrows showing airflow direction. Caption above figure: INSTALLATION DIRECTION.
    05U0FX-186
  2. 2
Check the operation of the valve with a vacuum pump.

Two-Way Check Valve Operation

Apply approx. 37 mmHg (1.46 inHg) vacuum at port A
ResultAirflow
Apply approx. 44 mmHg (1.73 inHg) vacuum at port B

FUEL VAPOR VALVE

Inspection

Fuel Vapor Valve Inspection

  1. 1
    Remove the valve.
Line drawing of the fuel vapor valve with arrows showing the direction of airflow when blown through during inspection.
    05U0FX-187
  2. 2
Blow through the valve and verify that air flows in the direction shown.
