ON-VEHICLE MAINTENANCE

B-14prose procedure

Timing belt installation (continued)

  1. 2
Verify that the camshaft pulley marks are aligned with the seal plate marks.
Caution: For intake side, align the E mark. For exhaust side, align the I mark.

  2. 3
Install the timing belt so that there is no looseness at the idler side or between the two camshaft pulleys.
Caution: Do not turn the crankshaft counterclockwise.

  3. 4
Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise, and align the timing belt pulley mark with the timing mark.
  4. 5
Verify that the camshaft pulley marks are aligned with the seal plate marks. If not aligned, remove the timing belt and repeat from tensioner installation.
  5. 6
Turn the crankshaft 1 and 5/6 turn clockwise, and align the timing belt pulley mark with the tension set mark.
View of crankshaft area showing the tension set mark and APPROX. 80 degree rotation indicator with arrow.

  6. 7
Loosen the tensioner lock bolt to apply tension to the timing belt.
View showing the tensioner lock bolt location with arrow indicator on the engine.

  7. 8
    Tighten the tensioner lock bolt.
  8. 9
Turn the crankshaft 2 and 1/6 turns clockwise and verify that the timing marks are correctly aligned.
  9. 10
Measure the timing belt deflection by applying moderate pressure (98 N, 10 kg, 22 lb) midway between the two camshaft pulleys. If the deflection is not correct, repeat from Step 7 above.
View of timing belt with deflection checking point marked, showing the belt span between pulleys where deflection is measured.
