Cylinder Head Gasket

Cylinder Head Gasket Installation

  1. 1
    Remove all foreign material from the top of the cylinder block.
    New cylinder head gasket placed on top of the cylinder block, showing the bore holes and coolant/oil passages.

    Place the new cylinder head gasket in position.

    Install the cylinder head.
    Cylinder head bolt tightening sequence diagram showing 10 bolts numbered 1 through 10 across the head in two rows of five, identifying the order in which the bolts are torqued.

    Apply clean engine oil to the bolt threads and seat faces.
  3. 3
    Tighten the cylinder head bolts in two or three steps in the order shown.

Thermostat Housing

    Remove all foreign material from the thermostat housing mounting surface.

    Install a new O-ring and the thermostat housing.

Seal Plate

    Install the seal plate on the cylinder head.

HLA

HLA (Hydraulic Lash Adjuster) Installation

  1. 1
    Apply clean engine oil to the friction surfaces.
    Hand applying clean engine oil to an HLA (hydraulic lash adjuster) before installation; HLA visible held in hand.

    If the HLA are being reused, install them in the position from which they were removed.
  3. 3
    Verify that the HLA move smoothly in their bores.
