Oil seal

Rear Oil Seal Removal

  1. 1
    Cut the oil seal lip with a razor knife.
    Cutting the rear oil seal lip with a razor knife. Arrow labeled OIL SEAL LIP points to the seal on the rear of the crankshaft.

    Remove the oil seal with a screwdriver protected with a rag.

Rear Oil Seal Installation

  1. 1
    Apply a small amount of clean engine oil to the lip of a new oil seal.
  2. 2
    Push the oil seal slightly in by hand.
    The oil seal must be tapped in until it is flush with the edge of the rear cover.
  3. 3
    Tap the oil seal in evenly with a suitable pipe and a hammer.
    Installing the rear oil seal with a pipe and hammer. Detail callout shows the seal protrusion of 0-0.5 mm (0-0.02 in) from the rear cover face.

Flywheel

Flywheel Installation

  1. 1
    Remove the sealant from the flywheel bolt holes in the crankshaft and from the flywheel bolts.
    If all the previous sealant cannot be removed from a bolt, replace the bolt.
    Do not apply sealant if a new bolt is used.

    Set the flywheel onto the crankshaft.
  3. 3
    Apply sealant to the flywheel bolts and install them.
    Applying sealant to a flywheel bolt with a tube/applicator before installing.

    Hold the flywheel with the SST.
    Tightening sequence for the flywheel bolts — six bolts numbered 1 through 6 in a star pattern. SST 49 E301 060 holds the flywheel.

    Tighten the bolts in two or three steps in the order shown in the figure.

Steps After Installation

  1. 1
    Connect the negative battery cable.
  2. 2
    Start the engine and perform engine adjustments as necessary.
